North Mason High School Students – Field Experience September 2026
Date: September 24, 2026
Location: Port of Grapeview and Fair Harbor Marina
By: Thom Worlund - Case Inlet Fishery Task Force Member
High School Students enrolled in classes that are a part of the Natural Resources Program – Aquaculture pathway attended a work force skills development trip to the Port of Grapeview and Fair Harbor Marina. The NMHS program is partnered with members of the Case Inlet Fisheries Task Force whose members Mark LaRiviere and Art Whitson teamed with NMHS Teacher Sommer Landers to provide lessons in knot tying, water quality testing, and temporary fish enclosure net maintenance.
These skills will be used by students as they participate in installing the enclosure and monitoring 15,000 coho smolts, as they are placed in a temporary holding enclosure for about 6 months starting in January 2027. As these fish acclimate to these Case Inlet waters, the students will make weekly trips to this facility to continue taking water samples around the structure, feeding the smolts, and checking the enclosure. The fish will be released from the enclosure sometime in May 2027.
